Development of personal style

Summer 2009
Summer 2009

Browsing through old files on my computer I came across a fashion survey I'd filled out when I was 16. I was very curious to read it as I was sure a lot had changed in my sartorial perception in 4 years. But had it? To my surprise, most of the key aspects of my style have remained the same.

Describe your personal style: I glam it up every once in a while. I borrow bags from my mom. I never wear make-up. I like things that are eccentric, cute and practical.
I have my own bags now, glam it up more than every once in a while and wear make-up except when I want to be avant-garde and go completely au naturel. I didn't start wearing it until I was 18 and the first few months it was just brown eyeliner. The last part, however? Still true to every letter. "Eccentric, cute and practical" can compete even with "beautiful".

Favorite store: 10 Corso Como.
Obviously.

Most underrated item: Obi.
My Japan phase started when I was 12 and never really ended, hence my ongoing obsession with traditional Japanese clothing. I still think obis are way cooler than corsets and hope to get a really stunning one from Japan one day.

Most overrated item: Skinny jeans. Jeans was made to make people feel comfortable wearing it, not consider anorexia.
I just ignore its existence now.

Of course, I listed Yohji Yamamoto as my favorite designer.
How has your style changed over the years?

Yohji Yamamoto Yohji Yamamoto
Yohji Yamamoto Spring 2005 RTW. One of my first ever favorite collections.

Hi, thanks for your reaction.
The shoe is probable made out of a strong material, don't know who designed it, but it does look very eccentric !

I still have the same style... maybe it comes with age. When you reach a certain age, you stick to the style that works for you. I don't experiment anymore. :-)

Have a great day! xoxo

hi Eva. how are you? :)
interesting read. my style had also changed quite a lot over the years. in my early years of liking fashion i love wearing many colors and layers, now i'm more into neutrals, dark, white, and gray, and the styles are more into somewhere in the transition between grunge and a bit of rocker look. :)

I love to share these memories with my sister telling each other "do you remember ..."

Nice insightful post! My sartorial leanings have remained unchanged but more refined, because of age there are some things that I can't wear anymore!

such a cute post. i too prefer to go without makeup. i didn't start wearing it until i turned 20, mostly because i have no idea what the heck i'm doing when it comes to applying it. xx

Isn't it fun going back and looking at what we were... Often we realize that we really do stay the same. That's what we are - and it is wonderful. Discovering ourselves, style and personality.

Your style is indeed recognizable.

I love it when you find things from childhood and realise how much you've changed, my style has changed quite a lot I guess, I used to always wear jeans and have long curly hair, now I wear high waisted skirts and have a buzz cut....

I feel like my style changes quarterly. I get bored of myself.

That's why this Spring I'm going to turn myself into a gypsy-like thing. Think Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix but not so drippy on and on drugs.

Have you ever though of the possibility that you simply skipped a few periods in your style development because you worn your mother's bags and you have a sort of serious (but beautiful!) style now despite being very young (ok, age is just number ...). Did you ever had a rebellion period?

Your blog encourages me :)

@Anonymous
What an interesting question! I've thought about this and realized I did have a rebellion period, but I never expressed it through my appearance. The only "extravagant" thing I remember having wanted to do in my early teens is dye my hair black - not out of rebelliousness but because I really loved black hair (regardless of the fact that it wouldn't suit me in a million years - I'm too pale, so I'd just look miserable). I didn't go through with it in the end.

You mentioned the bags - I grew up with them (and with the "enigma"). They've been a part of my life since I can remember and certainly there's no way to incorporate such bags into trying to be too much of a rebel (rebel without a cause). I've also always been surrounded by elegant people who I admired and I wanted to be like them, not look rebellious. :) Leaving appearances aside, I was getting into conflicts with teachers already in elementary school (it got worse in high school) but that was mostly because I'm too much of an idealist and don't believe in "authority".

Why don't you start your own blog? I think you have much to tell.

my style has evolved talhough some strong roots remain. I just found myself aiming more for designer products. But I aim to get most of them at sale :)

What I actually clothed myself in has changed from when I was teenager, because I didn't have the access to the type of clothes I wanted to wear. However, what I like hasn't changed. I look back at magazines and images I've collected, so even back then I aspired to dress the way I do now.

-ps. I think the obi is very under-rated too. It's hard to find a chic corset, that isn't exorbitantly priced. A simple black obi at any price point will pretty much look great. Funny enough I wore an obi yesterday.
